Mia

The late afternoon sun beat down on John’s shoulders as he opened the sliding patio door. Standing there was Mia. He’d known her since she was a toddler with scraped knees and pigtails, but the young woman standing before him in a thin sundress that clung to her curves was a far cry from those memories. She was a stranger—one he was instantly, uncomfortably drawn to.

“Hey, John,” she said, offering a warm, quiet smile. “Are you busy, or do you have time to hang out for a bit?”

Her voice still carried the bright cadence he remembered from her childhood, but there was a grounded, adult tone to it now.

“I’m not busy,” John said, stepping back. “Come on in.”

As she brushed past him into the air-conditioned living room, the faint scent of her floral perfume filled the doorway. For a fraction of a second, his mind betrayed him, flashing to the scent of his late wife, Sarah—the subtle floral soap she used to wear, the soft tone of her voice in the evenings, and the stark contrast of how that quiet woman transformed into a desire-driven animal once they were behind closed doors. John’s gaze flicked involuntarily to the framed photo of Sarah on the lounge room wall. The house had been an echo chamber of silence since she passed, and the emptiness felt heavier every day.

“Do you mind if we sit outside?” Mia asked, glancing toward the backyard. “I saw the pool and was hoping we could go for a dip.”

“Funny you mention it,” John replied, forcing a neutral tone. “I was just about to put my trunks on. Help yourself to the patio.”

“Great. I already have my swimsuit on underneath,” she said, reaching behind her back to unzip her dress.

John retreated to his bedroom, his chest tight. He leaned against the closed door, taking a slow breath as he swapped his clothes for swim trunks. Don’t go down that road, he warned himself, staring at his reflection in the bathroom mirror. Mike and Sue trusted you to keep an eye on her while they’re out.

When he stepped back out onto the patio, his breath caught. Mia’s dress was draped over a chair. She stood near the water’s edge in a navy-blue bikini that left very little to the imagination.

“Is this okay?” she asked, turning toward him with a modest gesture. “I bought it last week.”

John kept his eyes fixed strictly on her face. “It looks fine, Mia. Can I get you something to drink?”

“What do you have?”

“There’s some beer left over from when your dad came by, cider, or wine. Or soda, if you prefer.”

“A cider sounds great, thanks.”

He retrieved two cold bottles from the kitchen, using the chill of the glass against his palm to steady his nerves. He handed one to her, their fingers briefly touching as she took it. They sat down in the shaded loungers, the steady hum of the pool filter filling the silence.

“So, how are things going?” John asked, steering the conversation to safe ground. “How’s adult life treating you?”

“It’s fine, I suppose,” she said, taking a sip and looking out at the water. “Though it gets a little boring. I really wish I had a boyfriend.”

“You’re only eighteen, Mia. Give it time,” John said gently. “There’s no need to rush into anything.”

“What if I don’t want to wait?” She set her bottle on the side table and turned toward him, her expression shifting to something candid and surprisingly direct. “I really want to have sex.”

John had just taken a sip of his cider. The words hit him so fast he choked, coughing into his arm as cider nearly sprayed across the patio.

“Jesus, Mia,” he wheezed, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. “Where did that come from?”

Mia’s cheeks flushed pink, but she didn’t look away. “I’m serious. All my friends talk about their relationships and their sexual adventures, and I sit there with absolutely nothing to say. It’s frustrating.” She rested her elbows on her knees, her voice dropping, revealing a quiet, naïve honesty. “I haven’t even really masturbated properly, John. I’ve never even kissed a man.”

The admission hung in the warm air, raw and completely unexpected. John looked at her, seeing both the burgeoning adult and the utter innocence behind her eyes. The quiet grief that had weighed on his chest all afternoon flared alongside a sudden, sharp spike of desire.

“Mia…” John began, his throat dry. “Sex isn’t just something you cross off a list because your friends are talking about it.”

“I know that,” she said softly, shifting her chair closer to his. “But I don’t want to just do it with some random guy from a party. I want it to be with someone I actually like. Someone who knows what they’re doing.” She reached out, placing a small, warm hand over his wrist. “Someone like you.”

The contact sent a charge straight through him. The logical part of his mind shouted at him to pull back, but the sheer loneliness of the past few years pulled him in the opposite direction.

“You don’t know what you’re asking,” John murmured, his voice dropping an octave.

“I think I do,” she replied quietly.

John looked at her for a long moment, the quiet patio suddenly feeling miles away from the rest of the world. “If we do this… it stays right here. No one can ever know.”

“I can keep a secret,” she whispered.

He reached out, his hand sliding behind her neck, and pulled her in. The first kiss was tentative, testing the boundary they were actively erasing. Her lips were soft, yielding instantly beneath his. As he deepened the kiss, tracing her lower lip with his tongue, a soft sigh escaped her throat. Her hands slid up his arms, resting on his shoulders as she leaned into him fully.

John reached around her back, finding the thin knot of her bikini top, and unfastened it. The fabric parted, revealing her bare breasts to the warm breeze. He broke the kiss, staring down at her firm, pale skin and hardening pink nipples. He leaned down, trailing kisses along her collarbone before taking one nipple into his mouth. Mia gasped, her back arching off the lounge chair as her fingers tangled tightly in his hair.

He lavished attention on her, sucking gently until a low moan rippled from her chest. Moving down, his hands slid to the side ties of her bikini bottoms. He untied them, letting the small strip of fabric drop to the tiles. She lay back, entirely bare, her breath coming in short, uneven hitches.

John shifted off his chair, kneeling between her legs. He slid his hands beneath her thighs, lifting her slightly as he leaned down. His breath ghosted over her smooth skin before his tongue found her centre.

Mia let out a sharp cry, her hands clutching the edges of the cushion. John took his time, drawing on years of experience, expertly building the rhythm. He slid a finger inside her tight, wet heat, curling it upward while his tongue worked against her clitoris.

“John—oh God,” she gasped, her hips rising instinctively to meet his mouth.

He maintained the pressure, feeling her body tighten around his finger until she shuddered violently, an intense orgasm breaking over her. Her breathing turned into ragged gasps as she rode out the crest of the sensation.

Before the silence could fully settle, the harsh, sharp ring of John’s cell phone shattered the quiet, buzzing loudly against the glass table next to his cider.

John froze. He glanced at the screen. Mike.

A surge of adrenaline hit him like ice water. Mia’s eyes went wide, her chest still heaving as she stared at the phone.

John held up a single finger, silently commanding her to stay completely still. He cleared his throat twice, picked up the phone, and swiped to answer, putting it to his ear while trying to regulate his breathing.

“Hey, Mike,” John said, his voice forced into a calm, amiable tone.

“Hey John, sorry to bother you,” Mike’s voice crackled through the speaker. “Listen, Sue and I are running late at the hardware store. Has Mia come by your place today? She wasn’t answering her phone.”

As John opened his mouth to reply, Mia’s eyes flashed with a sudden, mischievous spark. Without a sound, she slid off the lounger onto her knees right between his legs. Before he could stop her, she took his rock-hard cock into her hands and guided the tip past her lips.

John’s breath caught in his throat. His knuckles turned white against the phone.

“John? You there?” Mike asked.

“Yeah—yeah, I’m here,” John managed, his voice strained as he fought to suppress a gasp. Mia slid further down, swallowing him deeper, her tongue swirling around the head of his shaft. “Sorry, just… dropping a hose by the pool.”

“All good. Have you seen her?”

“No,” John lied, his hips twitching involuntarily as Mia established a slow, wet rhythm over him. He gripped the edge of the glass table so hard that his forearm shook. “Haven’t seen her… today, Mike. Everything… looks fine over here.”

“Alright, cool. If she shows up, tell her to head home around six, alright?”

“Will do… mate. See you later,” John ground out through clenched teeth, slamming the end-call button before tossing the phone onto the cushion.

He let out a heavy groan, looking down at Mia, who looked up at him through her lashes, a victorious smirk playing on her lips.

“You’re playing a dangerous game,” John panted, pulling her up by her waist.

“It worked, didn’t it?” she murmured against his mouth.

He didn’t answer. He stood up, stripped off his swim trunks, and guided her back onto the lounge chair. Positioning himself at her entrance, he looked down into her eyes, his hands resting on either side of her head.

“Tell me if it hurts,” he said softly.

“I want you, John. Put it in.”

He pushed forward slowly, encountering the barrier of her tightness. Mia winced, taking a short, sharp breath as her hands gripped his shoulders. John paused, kissing her forehead and whispering low reassurances until her body gradually uncoiled. With a slow, continuous push, he drove fully inside her.

She let out a long breath, her arms wrapping tight around his neck. “Okay… okay.”

John began to move, establishing a smooth, deep pace. The pool filter hummed in the background, rhythmically underlying the wet friction of their bodies and the creak of the chair. He angled his hips, catching a precise spot inside her that made her head fall back, a loud moan escaping her lips.

“Right there,” she whimpered, her heels digging into his thighs. “John, don’t stop.”

He increased the speed of his thrusts, reaching down with one hand to find her clitoris, rubbing it in sync with his movements. The combination pushed her over the edge again; her inner walls contracted tightly around him, pulsing in violent spasms. The sensation shattered John’s remaining self-control. With a deep, guttural groan, he thrust deep inside her and released, his pulse throbbing as he came.

He collapsed forward, resting his chest against hers as their breaths mingled in the cooling afternoon air.

They lay together for minutes in absolute silence, the sky above them turning shades of orange and purple. Finally, John withdrew and sat up on the edge of the chair, resting his elbows on his knees as he stared at the tiles.

The immediate rush of the encounter began to recede, leaving behind a heavy, complex exhaustion. He looked over his shoulder at Mia, who was sitting up, pulling her hair back over one shoulder.

“Are you alright?” he asked, his voice rough.

“I’m better than alright,” she said quietly, touching his lower back. “That was incredible.”

John ran a hand over his face, feeling every bit of his fifty-three years. “Your dad called, Mia. I just lied straight to my friend’s face while you were on your knees.” He shook his head, looking down at his hands. “I’m weary, Mia. I’m tired of secrets, and if anyone finds out about this, it destroys everything.”

Mia reached around, placing her hand gently over his. Her tone lost its playfulness, becoming steady and sincere. “Nobody is going to find out. I know how to handle myself, John. I don’t want to cause trouble for you, but I don’t want this to just be a onetime thing either.”

John stared at the water, weighing the immense risk against the stark reality of his life before today. The house was still empty. Sarah was still gone. But for the last hour, the crushing weight of the silence had vanished.

He let out a long, slow breath, turning his hand over to interlock his fingers with hers.

“We have to be smart about this,” John said, his voice firm, though his eyes showed his resignation. “Extremely smart. If we do this, it happens on my terms, when it’s completely safe.”

A soft, genuine smile spread across Mia’s face. “I can live with that.”

John looked at her for a moment longer, then pulled her close, wrapping an arm around her shoulder as the first stars appeared above the patio. He was weary, and he knew the road ahead was fraught with danger, but as he held her in the twilight, he made his choice to step into the dark and see where it led.
