I had just returned home, it was 1130 pm. This was new for me. I had been working the midnight shift for a long time, but now I was working evenings. I entered my apartment. Dark, empty, lonely. I had only been here for seven months. My girlfriend had left a couple of months ago—the gratitude. I moved down here to be with her, and after only five months, she abandoned me. That’s life.
So, I entered my apartment. A boring Monday evening. No plans, no friends to speak of, and very not sleepy at all. I didn’t bother turning on the light. Working nights had me attuned to moving about in the dark. I walked to the kitchen, grabbed a glass of water, and then sat down in my dining room. If you could call it that. My apartment was small. Just four rooms. A very narrow kitchen, a bathroom, a bedroom, and the living room, with a half wall near the window separating a section for the dining room. It was barely big enough for a small table.
I sat facing the window. Watching the world pass by outside. A guy walking his dog, cars slowly passing, the quiet calm of life after dark. As I watched, a light caught my eye. Across the street, a light had come on, and a shadowy figure moved behind the gossamer of curtains. It was the first time I had ever seen anyone in the apartments across the way, but, in my defense, my awake time was everyone else’s sleep time.
The curtain opened, and a half-dressed brunette stood in the window. I watched as she moved about the room, unconcerned that she might be seen. I was intrigued by this glimpse into this unknown life. It was semi-erotic, the way she moved about. I felt guilty for watching. Dirty, like I was betraying an unknown trust.
I rose, turned on the living room light, and sat down on the couch, getting up every few minutes to perform some arbitrary task, to make myself seen. I knew if she saw me, she’d know I could see her too. After about ten minutes, the light went off, and another appeared in the hallway, but I could no longer see her. Satisfied I had sent my message, I turned off the light and went to bed.
The next couple of nights went by quietly. I came home, watched the world pass me by, or watched some T.V., but did not see my neighbor. On Thursday night, I opened the door to my apartment and immediately noticed the light across the street. I sat at the table, not wishing for anything, not wanting to watch, but drawn by the taboo of what it was. Moments later, she appeared. The curtains were already open, and I could see clearly that she donned only a towel. She moved about the room, picking up items I couldn’t make out and crossing the room, returning, crossing again.
A second shadow appeared in the hallway. As the shadow approached, the lithe form of a blonde woman revealed itself. Completely naked. She approached my neighbor and took her in an embrace. They kissed. The towel fell to the floor. Both women stood there, naked, making out in front of the window. Not close enough to be seen from the street, but definitely within my view. I felt excitement and shame at the same time. I wanted to watch; I shouldn’t be watching.
They moved across the room and lay down. I couldn’t see the bed. The top of the bed was at the same height as the bottom of the window. But I could see everything that was happening on the bed. The items from earlier had been a variety of toys. My neighbor was on the bottom as her blonde companion worked between her legs, ass in the air and on full display. Suddenly, I wished I were closer. I watched. heart racing, my mind spinning with a hundred thoughts. What am I doing? This is so wrong. Get up! Leave! Stop watching! But I did none of those. I sat. Transfixed by the events taking place in 2C.
After some sheet pulling and back arching, my neighbor got off the bed, kissed the blonde again, then lay her down so she was sideways on the bed, head towards me. Not the ideal position, but who am I to complain about a free show? My neighbor began to climb onto the bed, then looked at me.
LOOKED AT ME.
Directly at me. Can she see me? Does she know I’m watching? Oh, shit. What should I do?
Then she put her head down and began to return the favor her partner had just bestowed upon her. Not knowing what else to do, I got up and went to take a shower—a cold one.
When I returned, the lights were out. I went to bed, but rest was uneasy.
The next morning, I rose, still thinking about the night before. My conscience got the better of me, and I decided to confess myself to her. At about ten a.m. I saw a blonde woman leave the building who looked like the woman I had seen. I gathered up my courage and went across the street, dreading what might come. Expecting the worst, my body was already preparing for the assault to the groin I expected to receive.
I knocked on the door. The brunette answered almost immediately, like she was waiting. She was even more lovely up close.
“Hi, uhh…I live across the way,” I stammered, gesturing across the street. “I just….I uh….I can see you. At night. Your window is right across from mine.” I waited.
“I know,” that was all she said. I flinched, even though she did not attempt to strike me.
“You know?” I asked cautiously.
“Yes. Did you enjoy the show?”
“I may have left early. I felt….”
“Bad? Guilty? I’m sorry,” she offered as I nodded. “I’ve seen you. You used to work late at night. I’d like you to watch. It gets me hot,” she purred as she gently stroked my crotch.
“I was expecting you to be furious. Not this,” the apprehension left my body.
“Please, watch. Maybe someday soon you can come join me,” she offered.
“That would be….wheww,” I had no words.
“So, you’ll be watching tonight?” her eyes demanded affirmation.
“Yes,”
“Good, see you tonight,” she said, leading me towards the door.
“Um..By the way, I’m Doug.”
“Hmmm, you can call me Tootsie for now. As in 2C,” she kissed me, groping my enlarged crotch, then closed the door. I walked away in a stupor, not knowing what the hell just happened.
