Time Heals All Wounds

The rhythmic patter of rain against the glass did little to ease the exhaustion settling into Mark’s shoulders. It was exactly 8:00 PM on a Friday, and after a grueling, seemingly endless day drafting blueprints and arguing over structural tolerances, the quiet of the apartment building lobby was a welcome relief.

He crossed the polished marble floor, his damp footsteps echoing softly, and stepped into the waiting elevator. Out of sheer muscle memory, his finger found and pressed the button for the fifteenth floor. The doors slid shut, sealing him into a momentary, humming silence as the elevator climbed.

When the bell chimed and the doors parted, Mark stepped out into the familiar, brightly lit corridor. He walked the length of the hallway to his door, pulled his keychain from his pocket, and slid the brass key into the lock. It turned with a familiar click.

He pushed the door open, stepping into the profound stillness of his dark, lonely apartment.

Navigating the shadows with the practiced ease of someone who lived entirely alone, Mark slipped off his damp shoes by the mat. He reached out, blindly but accurately catching a hanger to drape his wet raincoat in the closet. Turning toward the small console table in the hallway, he tossed his keys into the ceramic dish sitting right beneath the mirror. They landed with their usual metallic clatter.

Thirsty and still shrouded in the dark, he made his way into the kitchen. He pulled open the refrigerator door, the sudden flood of cool amber light illuminating the neat, sparse shelves. He reached in, grabbed a cold drink, and nudged the door shut with his elbow.

As the kitchen plunged back into darkness, a familiar female voice cut through the quiet from the shadows of the living room.

“It’s nice to see you still have the same routine.”

Mark froze. The cold bottle in his hand suddenly felt like ice against his palm, and he didn’t dare take a breath.

For a long, agonizing beat, he stood immobilized in the dark kitchen, his mind racing to process the sound that had just cut through the silence. Am I finally losing it? he wondered. He had thought that he stopped seeing her ghost months ago. Perhaps it was just an exhausted mind playing tricks on him that seemed like the most logical explanation after a grueling eighty-hour work week. He hesitated, his hand hovering near the wall, deeply reluctant to flip the lights on. If he turned them on and the room was empty, the crushing weight of reality—that she wasn’t really there—would be worse than the haunting illusion. It would mean he had really lost it entirely.

The last time he had heard that voice was about a year ago, delivering a devastatingly quiet sentence about how she “needed some time to think” before walking out.  He still had the text message stored on his phone. He would occasionally read it as a form of torture.

Steeling himself, Mark finally reached out and flipped the switch next to the sink.

The sudden, harsh fluorescent light flooded the space, revealing the living room.

There she was.

Sitting cross-legged in his worn leather recliner was the woman who had haunted his thoughts for almost twelve months. Her long, curly black hair was damp, clinging to her shoulders in dark spirals. She was wearing a tight grey tank top without a bra, the thin fabric stretched to its absolute limit by her ample bosom, her nipples erect from the cool air conditioning and paired with a black pair of his own boxer briefs.

The moment the light flared to life, she struck a match and casually lit a cigarette.

Mark stared, his voice catching in his throat before he managed to scrape together the words. “Why are you sitting in my apartment… in my clothes?”

She took a slow drag, her eyes meeting his. “I got soaked waiting down on the street,” she said softly, gesturing faintly toward the window. “I used the key I still had from a year ago. I put my clothes in the dryer… I hope you don’t mind.”

Right on cue, a cheerful, electronic melody chimed from the utility closet down the hall—the dryer playing its little ending tune as the cycle spun to a stop.

“Hi, Synthia,” Mark said, his voice a mix of disbelief and a year’s worth of unspoken words. He took a slow breath, leaning against the kitchen counter. “It’s nice to see you. Especially since the last time we spoke, it was actually just a text from you saying you needed some space. Then I came home, and all your stuff was gone.”

Synthia looked down at her cigarette, the smoke curling up, before she met his eyes again. A genuine look of regret softened her face.

“I’m so sorry for doing it that way, Mark,” she said quietly. “I got completely inside my own head back then. I was overthinking everything, and I stupidly convinced myself that the grass was greener on the other side of the fence.”

She took another slow drag, leaning back into the leather of his recliner.

“For the past year, I’ve just been floating,” she admitted, her voice dropping a register. “Moving from one place to another, one city to the next. But the further I got, the more I realized… I was being pulled back… to you. It took me a long time and a lot of distance to finally see that what we had together was actually a really good thing.”

Mark let out a long, heavy breath, the cold drink forgotten on the counter behind him. He looked at her, truly looked at her, past the familiar curve of her silhouette and the damp hair, straight into her eyes.

“If you ever felt trapped, Synthia,” he said, his voice thick with a year of repressed frustration and lingering affection, “all you ever needed to do was just talk about it. It’s not like I followed you like a puppy. We both had careers and it seemed to me like we were on the same path.”

He took a step closer to the edge of the living room, shaking his head.

“You didn’t need to be cryptic. You didn’t need to assume I should automatically know what you were feeling or read your mind. You just needed to do your absolute favorite thing in the world: talk.”

Mark walked around the kitchen counter, crossing the short distance into the living room, and sank heavily onto the loveseat.

Synthia watched him move, then leaned forward to crush out her cigarette in a small saucer resting on the end table. It joined a small cluster of several other crushed-out butts, proving she had been waiting there in the dark for a while.

She stood up, the oversized boxer briefs shifting and settling low on her hips as she walked over to the loveseat. Sliding onto the cushions right next to him, she tucked one foot underneath her while leaving the other planted on the floor, angling her entire body toward his.

Slowly, she reached out and placed a hand, her fingernails perfectly manicured and gleaming in the lamplight, gently onto his thigh. Looking directly into his eyes, her expression completely bare, she spoke softly.

“I am so sorry for hurting you, Mark. Truly.”

Mark looked closely at her face, searching the features he knew so intimately.

“I take responsibility too, I feel that there were things that either I did to push you away or not do to keep your attention. I just never knew for sure.

Without the usual makeup she used to wear, she looked completely bare. There was no cosmetic mask to hide behind, no shield between her and the world—just her raw, exposed expression in the dim light. Seeing her like this, stripped of all pretense, a familiar ache bloomed in his chest. More than anything, he wanted to believe her. He wanted to feel, with absolute certainty, that she was finally being truthful.

Her hand squeezed his thigh slightly, her fingers warm through the fabric of his trousers. She leaned in a fraction closer, ensuring there was no distance left for doubts to hide.

“It took me a whole year to finally realize it, Mark,” she said, her voice steady but laced with emotion. “But I’m here now. This is currently the only place in the world I want to be, and you are the only person who has ever truly mattered to me.”

Mark looked at her maskless face, taking in the smooth texture of her skin and the effortless, natural beauty that had always captivated him. Even under the harsh light, she was stunning without trying.

“You would one hundred percent understand if I have some hesitance about welcoming you back,” he said, his voice quiet but measured. “Considering the past three hundred forty-five days, twelve hours, and seven minutes.” He offered a faint, tired smile. “Not that I’ve been counting. It’s just the engineer in me… the habit of precise markings.”

He stood up from the loveseat, needing a moment of space to breathe, and walked over to the sliding glass door. He looked out at the rain-soaked city, the blurry neon lights bleeding into the wet pavement below. But he wasn’t really looking at the skyline; his eyes were locked on her reflection in the glass.

“I’m willing to give us another chance,” he murmured.

Behind him, the sofa shifted. Synthia got up and walked over, her bare feet silent on the floor. She stepped up right behind him and wrapped her arms tightly around his waist, pressing her face firmly against his back. As they stood there looking out at the storm, she began to silently shed tears, her shoulders trembling against him for the damage she had so selfishly caused.

Mark reached up to wipe a stray tear from his own face, then turned around to face her. Seeing her trembling, he pulled her in close, burying his face in her damp hair and holding her tightly against him. The weight of the past year seemed to lift, if only a little, in the warmth of the embrace.

“Promise me something, Synthia,” he murmured into the quiet of the room, his grip tightening just a fraction. “Promise me that if you ever begin having anxiety about us again, all you need to do is talk about it. No running, no shutting down. Just tell me, and together we can fix it… together.”

Synthia held onto him, her forehead resting against his chest as her breathing finally began to steady.

“I promise,” she whispered, looking up at him through wet eyelashes. “We are good together, Mark. We always have been.”

Mark looked down at her, a gentle warmth finally replacing the exhaustion in his eyes. He brushed a stray, damp curl away from her face.

“You look hungry,” he said softly, a faint smile returning to his lips. “Why don’t you go settle in and get comfortable while I order us something to be delivered? Do you still like Italian?”

Synthia let out a soft laugh, the tear tracks on her cheeks drying. “Mark, it’s my heritage. Olive oil is practically in my blood.”

“Right, how could I forget?” he teased gently.

He pulled out his phone and navigated to their favorite local spot. He ordered them both hearty portions of pasta, making sure to add a couple of slices of tiramisu for dessert. Knowing they had a long night of catching up ahead of them, he added a good bottle of red wine to the delivery order as well.

In the hour it took for the delivery to arrive, Synthia set to work. She carried her suitcase into the guest bedroom—a space that Mark had left completely untouched, like a time capsule from the day she walked out. She neatly put her things away in the drawers before stripping the bare mattress and pulling fresh, crisp sheets over the corners of the bed.

Down the hall, the steady roar of the shower finally cut out. Mark wiped the water from his eyes and slid the glass door open, only to find Synthia already waiting in the steam-filled bathroom.

She was leaning with her back against the sink, a plush bath towel draped over her arm.

“The food just arrived,” she said with a playful smile, stepping forward to hand him the towel. As he reached for it, she playfully slapped him on the butt and turned toward the door.

“Hurry up,” she called back over her shoulder with a laugh, “the food is getting cold!”

Mark dried off quickly, tossing on a comfortable t-shirt and a pair of joggers before heading out into the main living space.

By the time he walked into the dining area, Synthia was already seated at the table. The takeout containers were open, filling the apartment with the rich, comforting aroma of garlic, savory tomato sauce, and fresh herbs. It smelled absolutely delicious, a stark contrast to the quiet, empty nights Mark had grown used to over the last year.

They ate hungrily, the rich pasta and fresh bread tasting better than anything either of them had eaten in months. Mark poured the wine, and as the bottle slowly emptied, the tension completely melted from the room.

For the first time in a year, they truly talked. They laughed as they reminisced about the good times—the impromptu road trips, the inside jokes, and the quiet weekend mornings they used to share. But they didn’t shy away from the hard parts, either. They openly discussed the rough patches that had strained them before, speaking with a maturity and honesty that had been missing from their relationship the first time around.

During a particularly vulnerable moment, as Mark recounted how quiet the apartment had felt, Synthia lovingly reached across the table and touched his arm, her eyes full of warmth and understanding.

Once dinner was finished, Mark stood up to clear the table. As he gathered the empty takeout containers, Synthia stepped up beside him to help. Mark paused, setting the containers down for a brief second, and lovingly pulled her head into his side, holding her close as she leaned into his warmth.

Mark set the containers down completely, the task forgotten, and turned her toward him. He placed a hand gently under her chin, lifting her face toward his.

When his lips finally met hers, the familiarity of it was overwhelming. She was definitely real.  The soft, perfect feel of her mouth and the unmistakable taste of her kiss rushed back all at once—a powerful, sudden wave crashing against the rocks, sweeping away the long, empty months of her absence in a single breath.

Without breaking the kiss, Mark wrapped his arms around her waist and lifted her effortlessly, setting her down on the edge of the kitchen counter right next to the empty wine glasses.

Synthia didn’t miss a beat. She wrapped her legs tightly around his hips and tangled her fingers into the hair at the back of his head, gently pulling him closer. Her touch was tender but desperate, completely unwilling to let the kiss end. As his lips moved against hers, a profound wave of clarity washed over her. She realized just how much she had starved for this over the past year—how deeply she had missed the precise, intoxicating way his kisses had always made her feel safe, wanted, and completely at home.

Mark finally broke the kiss, drawing back just enough to catch his breath. He looked down at her, a breathless smile spreading across his face as he shook his head.

“You always did have a way of making me completely forget what I was doing,” he murmured, his voice thick with affection.

Synthia laughed softly, her eyes bright. She hopped down off the counter, her bare feet hitting the floor with a soft thud. “Well, I’m going to go take a shower while you finish up out here,” she said, turning to head down the hallway.

As she walked away, Mark couldn’t resist. He reached out with a hand still damp from clearing the dinner dishes and playfully rubbed her booty. Synthia gasped, throwing a wicked, grinning glance back over her shoulder before disappearing into the bathroom.

The steam in the bathroom was thick and heavy by the time Synthia finished her shower. Reaching out, she wiped her hand across the fogged-up glass door, clearing a circle to look out.

There stood Mark. He was leaning back against the sink, holding a fresh, plush towel out for her, mirroring exactly what she had done for him earlier.

Mark let out a low, appreciative whistle, his eyes raking over her with a familiar warmth. “You look as good as you ever have,” he said, stepping forward to hand her the towel. “A little skinnier than I remember, maybe, but still good enough to eat.”

Synthia wrapped the towel around herself, offering a playful, narrowed glance. “Don’t you be thinking you’re going to fatten me up, Mark,” she joked, stepping out of the shower. She leaned in close, giving him a brilliant smile. “Besides, you look just as yummy as ever.”

Synthia stood in front of the fogged-up mirror, dropping the towel from around her body as she cleared a wide circle across the glass. Unbothered by her reflection, she slid right into her familiar nightly ritual, reaching for the array of lotions and scented potions she had unpacked earlier. She carefully massaged the creams into her skin, the soothing fragrance filling the bathroom as she prepared for bed.

“Ok, Synthia, don’t fuck this up,” She told her reflection.

Once finished, she picked up the damp towel, walked down the hallway, and tossed it into the laundry basket just outside the utility room.

Turning back toward her bedroom, she walked in completely naked, the cool breeeze of the air conditioning brushing against her skin. She reached for the switch, turned out the light, and let the darkness of the room swallow her up.

During the night Mark had to make sure she was really there. He walked to her room and watched her sleep from the doorway. She lay in bed with just a sheet partially draped across her body. Mark always liked to watch her sleep.

“Don’t leave, cuddle with me.” she said sleepily.

Mark laid next to Synthia and she  snuggled into his chest. He could feel her eyes fixed on him.

“Have you been wanting to take out your hostilities on me?” She asked.

“No,  I was never mad, just hurt. We talked it through and besides I’m happy you came back.” He told her.

“Too bad,” she said, “I could use a good grudge fuck to put me to sleep.”

Mark laughed a slight laugh and shucked his pajama bottoms. His cock was harder than it had been in almost a year.

“First I want you to give me head,” he ordered.

She knelt between his legs and took the length down her throat.

“Gag on it, cunt,” he commanded.

She always loved it when he dominated her during sex. She got on her knees between his legs and did as he commanded he held handfuls of her hair while he pounded her face. She occasionally pulled away to gasp for air. Finally he unloaded some pent up frustrations down her throat. She swallowed it all.

They both lay naked, sweaty, and exhausted while they recovered.

“I hope you’re not finished,” he told her, “because when I recover I plan to flip you over with your ass up and pound that pussy from the back while I shove you face into a pillow.”

She smiled a devilish smile and flipped over an put her ass in the air and swayed side to side.

“Come on cowboy, mount the fuck up,” she ordered.

His cock began to stiffen again and he stood at the foot of the bed and pulled her on to his cock and pounded her pussy while pushing the side of her bed into a pillow.  The sound of sweaty thighs slapping echoed through the apartment as he pounded her.  She came so many times she lost count and Mark finally filled her pussy until he collapsed heaving on her back and the both slumped to the side gasping for air.

“Welcome home Syn,” Mark said between gasps.

“Thank you, baby,” She told him.

 Sleep claimed them quickly.

The next morning, the soft glow of dawn filtered through the blinds, casting warm lines across the bedroom. Mark blinked his eyes open. Synthia was still there.

She was sound asleep beside him, snoring softly with her head resting heavily on his chest. One of her legs was draped possessively across his, pinning him to the mattress. Smiling to himself, Mark carefully and quietly maneuvered his way out of her embrace, slipping out of the warm bed without waking her. He slipped into his pajama bottoms.

He padded down the hall to the kitchen. Wanting to surprise her, he set to work making what he remembered as her absolute favorite breakfast: thick, crispy blueberry waffles and three strips of crispy bacon. He chopped up a vibrant assortment of fresh fruit to go on top and poured two tall glasses of orange juice—specifically the kind with plenty of pulp, just how she liked it.

As the waffle iron began to hiss and steam, the soft sound of bare footsteps echoed from the hallway. Synthia walked into the kitchen, completely nude, rubbing the sleep from her eyes as she looked around for coffee.

“It looks like there was a train wreck in your hair,” Mark told her.

“No, it wasn’t a train wreck just a fun time,” She said looking then smiled and grabbed her favorite mug.

She paused, taking in the scene—Mark standing at the counter, the smell of fresh blueberries and vanilla scented batter filling the air, and her favorite breakfast neatly laid out he laid the three strips of bacon in the skillet. Her face softened into a warm, sleepy smile.

“I see they’re still in the exact same spot and don’t burn my bacon,” she murmured, her voice beautifully raspy from sleep as she looked over at him.

“Yes ma’am,” he told her.

Synthia poured herself another cup of coffee, the dark liquid steaming in her mug, and leaned back against the counter. She took a slow sip, her eyes playfully scanning him from head to toe.

“You know,” she murmured, a mischievous smile playing on her lips, “I have an idea. After we finish this amazing breakfast, we should just spend the rest of the day in bed. Especially since I’m already dressed in my sleep clothes.”

Mark paused, a piece of fresh fruit in hand, and looked her up and down with an amused smirk. “Synthia, you’re completely naked, and trust me we won’t get any sleeping done.”

She locked eyes with him, her smile widening as she raised her mug in a tiny toast.

“Exactly, baby brother.”
